Types of hearing loss symptoms and causes

Not all hearing problems are the same, there are different types of hearing loss, and most importantly its symptoms depend on its causes.

Hearing loss is a condition in which a person is not able to listen or hear properly because of the issue in an auditory system but there are types of hearing loss that could be a cause of the hearing problems in a person. Although the cause of hearing loss is not due to any underlying disease, however, its impact on the ears could make a person feel incomplete.

How does our hearing system work?

Through the outer part of the ear, we can see a canal that goes to the eardrum. It is responsible for gathering and generating soundwaves. Furthermore, the middle ear is a closed space behind the eardrum that comprises bones called ossicles that transmit sound and vibrations to the inner ear. The inner ear has sound receptors which are kind of microscopic hair cells that are showered in a fluid. The movement of the ossicles revives the hair cells, which in turn trigger the auditory nerve endings that send an electrical impulse to the brain.

A hearing has a proper process and every step of it includes healthy functioning. If any part of it experiences dysfunction then it may trigger hearing issues.

Types of hearing loss and symptoms

The symptoms of the auditory problem depend on the causes of hearing loss. As some people are born with hearing loss, while some suddenly experience deafness due to any illness or incident. However, most people develop the symptoms of hearing issues gradually. So, in case of hearing loss, one should understand the types of hearing loss to know the symptoms.

Conductive hearing loss

This type of hearing loss is when the outer ear does not allow the vibrations to pass to the inner ear, specifically the cochlea. Conductive hearing loss can happen because of many reasons, including the following:

  • an excess collection of earwax
  • glue ear
  • An infection in-ear with inflammation and fluid production
  • A hole or tear in the eardrum
  • Defect of the ossicles
  • Defect in eardrum

Ear infections can leave scars on the tissue, which might lessen the functioning of the eardrum. The ossicles may become damage in the form of trauma, fusing, or infection and together cause a condition known as ankylosis.

Sensorineural hearing loss

This type of hearing loss occurs because of dysfunction in the inner ear, auditory nerve, cochlea, or brain damage.

Sensorineural hearing loss happens due to impaired hair cells in the cochlea. The humans grow older, hair cells lose some of their activities, and hearing declines.

Furthermore, exposure to loud noises for a long time, especially high-frequency music, is another common cause of hair cell impairment. Damaged or broken hair cells cannot be replaced.

Sensorineural is total deafness that may result from congenital deformities, infection in the inner ear or trauma.

Mixed hearing loss

This type of hearing loss is a mixture of sensorineural and conductive hearing loss. Long-term infections can harm both the ossicles and eardrums. However, in some cases, surgical treatment may restore hearing, but it is not always result-oriented.

The most common causes of mixed hearing loss are the combination of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.

  • Age factor, people above 60 many experiences this type of hearing loss
  • Excessive loud music or noise
  • Specific medication
  • Disease or tumors
  • Head trauma
  • Wax in the ear
  • Infection in ear
