Most disposable hearing aids are digital and can be bought either online or offline. These hearing aids also come in designs that allow the wearer to intentionally boost certain frequencies via dedicated adjustments.

A few years ago, the hearing aid battery industry standardized battery sizes and came up with a color code to help you remember your battery size.

On the back of each battery is a tab that you pull off to "activate" the battery. Each color corresponds to a different size. Now the numbers and colors for each size are all standard. Sometimes you may see other letters after the numbers, but those are arbitrary letters. The most important thing to remember is size and color as noted in the table below.

If you can't remember your size, keep the color in mind. Your (hearing healthcare professional) will also have this information in your chart and can look it up for you any time.

1Turn off the hearing aid and remove the hearing aid from the ear.
2Locate the battery compartment and open the battery door.
3Turn the hearing aid over and release the hearing aid battery into the opposite hand. Dispose of the hearing aid battery in the trash. Zinc air batteries can be safely disposed of in the trash.
4Remove a fresh hearing aid battery from the battery pack. Check to make sure that the battery is the correct size and type for the hearing aid.
5Hold the battery by the end of the plastic battery tab. Place the battery into the battery case. Peel off the plastic battery tab.
6Close the battery door and place the hearing aid in the ear. Listen to various sounds to make sure that the battery is working.
7Replace the battery every 10 to 14 days or when the hearing aid emits beeping tones.
